Happy Birthday!

Yikes! It's been a week and a half since LaVor's birthday. Lots of craziness between then and now, hence why I'm just getting around to writing about it.

We were lucky that it landed on a Saturday this year, so we got to spend the whole day together (which is the only thing he said he wanted). The day started with some gift opening. A few new shirts and a new, cooling, pillow. Then we got ready and went to breakfast (one of LaVor's favorite things).

We have the yummiest place nearby that has the best breakfast. I had scarfed half of mine down before LaVor even started eating his. It's that good!

We swung by the house before going to visit LaVor's mom and grandparents, where we ended up washing the car. LaVor needed to wash the roof of the car and asked The Lime to get the step stool. That's when I pulled out another gift; a Little Giant ladder. LaVor has been wanting one for years, and although The Lime spoiled the surprise one day at Costco, LaVor was still happy to receive it.

Once we got to LaVor's grandparents', we played a few holes of mini golf before the clouds rolled in and the rain soaked us. Then it was back to their house for some games before we went to dinner. On the way home, we stopped by a friend's house to say hi and pick up some Girl Scout cookies.

The next day, we had my parents over for dinner (which LaVor had to make) and birthday cake. I had been looking forward to this cake for weeks and limited my dinner intake so I'd have enough room to enjoy a substantial slice.

We're so lucky to have such a great daddy & husband. Even though he doesn't like making a big deal out of his day, we love making him feel extra special.

Willkommen zu Hause

My grandmother was welcomed home, in heaven, yesterday by her parents, siblings, and spouse. She was 89 years old.

We knew this time was fast approaching, as she had been in and out of the hospital for the last couple of months. I'm so grateful my boys were over their illnesses in time for us to enjoy one last visit with her, and my dad, last Monday. She was low on energy but did not lack in her love, wittiness, or compliments for The Lime and Doodlebug. Gosh, she loved them and showing them off at her facility. The old ladies there literally ate the boys up.

When we got there, she was in the middle of eating lunch with a friend, Gail. My dad, The Lime, Doodlebug, and I enjoyed our visit with them and especially enjoyed the strawberry ice cream Grandma ordered for The Lime. He didn't want it, and I know how much she hated wasting things, so I ate it for him (and to please her). I know she liked doing special things like that for people.

After lunch, my aunt and uncle joined us and we went up to Grandma's room where my dad and his siblings handled some business and I kept my boys busy. Grandma was worn out from the little activity she had already done that day but mustered enough energy to return a phone call to a friend that had left her numerous messages. I'm glad she was able to speak with her one last time.

Before we left, my dad videotaped us for a couple of minutes. As I sat next to Grandma on the couch, I put my hand on her knee and she patted it in response. I think I've mentioned in previous posts that she was never much of a lovey dovey while we were growing up. But once we started having kids, it's as if they brought out a new side of her; a side we had never seen before but one that all of us loved. She doted on my boys, calling The Lime her "hunk" and sharing the story of Doodlebug wanting to play with the older kids, with whoever she could. The Lime is the same age I was when my grandpa (her husband) passed away, and while I don't remember much of him, I hope The Lime and Grandma have spent enough time together that he remembers how amazing she was and how much she loved him.

I was laying in my bed last night, attempting to fall asleep but too overcome with thoughts and emotions, I was trying to rack my brain of every memory I have of Grandma. I want to record all that I can so my posterity will get a glimpse of the outstanding lady she was.

First off, I don't think I thanked her enough for her generosity. I have a daily reminder of her on my left ring finger that I am so grateful for. I love sharing its story with people when they compliment me on my wedding ring. It's beautiful, yes, but the story behind it means much more to me than its value.

Grandma passed away at 3:20 in the afternoon and I got a text message from my mom shortly after that, breaking the news. I had said a prayer earlier in the afternoon, that all would turn out the way it was meant to. At 2:58, I had two distinct rushes come over my body that something was going to happen but all would be well. It's hard to be sad when you know someone has a cheering section for them on the other side. My great grandfather passed away a month before my grandma turned 16, all of her siblings had passed away years ago (including a brother who passed away as a child) and she's been without my grandfather for exactly 26 years. She was the last one to arrive at the party and now there's a lot of celebrating going on.

I also happened to be cleaning my bathrooms when she passed, which I find coincidental. If you looked up "hard worker" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of my Grandma underneath it. Prior to her stroke a few years ago, she was still out in her yard all the time, maintaining her rental properties, she helped my family build the addition on our home, she ran a jewelry store with my grandfather, she grew up working on her family's ranch. I asked her, back in November, what special things her mom would do for them on their birthdays. She said nothing. They were always busy working and trying to make ends meet that there wasn't any time, nor funds, for special things. But Grandma never complained about that. She was a go-getter and knew that if you wanted something, you had to work for it.

The only time I've seen Grandma wear a dress was when I saw her wedding pictures. She always wore floral blouses and either black or navy slacks, with her black sandals (that were misplaced during her last hospital visit). She did, though, always have her hair done, nails manicured, and lipstick on. When we said goodbye to her last Monday, The Lime didn't want to kiss her goodbye but I made him (so glad I did!!!) and she made a comment of not leaving her mark on his cheek. I didn't mind her mark on my cheeks.

Grandma was honest and had no problem telling you what was on her mind. Like when LaVor and I went to visit her, while we were dating, and she told me not to be ashamed of my small chest. To make me feel better about myself, she let me know that her brothers used to tease her and say she had mosquito bites for boobs (because they were so small). She was known for telling people to lose weight, or to get braces, or to not do their bangs because they look too harsh (that would be me). It was never said maliciously but rather with someone's happiness and well-being in mind.

She came up with some creative quotes that we use often. "There's more room out than there is in." "Poco loco en la cabeza." "Ach du lieber!" "Prrrr koooo!"

She was big on vitamins and home remedies. She used to travel A LOT (pre-stroke) and would always send us a quick post card in the mail, telling us where she was, what she had seen, and where she was headed next. She and my dad would usually call each other on Sunday nights and no matter how old he was, she always called him Ronnie. She has pictures all over her house which might be why I wanted pictures all over our house. She also held onto plastic grocery bags, just in case, which I also do. Her refrigerator was always stocked with sodas and mini cans of apple, grape, and pineapple juice. It was a treat to then take the cans outside and crush them with her can crusher and throw them in the recycling. I think she tried feeding me KFC coleslaw and V8 once, both of which I refuse to consume. She was so good with her finances and made smart choices. She recommended to every person she met that they get a job with the state. She was so funny and always had a good time. One of the nurses at the hospital commented on how funny she was and how much fun, we as a family, must have together. She took great care of her cars; they were always spotless inside and out. She loved cats and adopted a stray that still hangs around her place even though she's not there. Speaking of cats, she had cat eye glasses for as long as I can remember. She called her walker her "Cadillac" and was very protective of it. If you were rough housing, she was adamant you be gentle, especially if children were involved.

These last (almost) 2 years that we've been able to live closer to Grandma have been a blessing for our family. The memories we've made are now treasures that we will hold with us forever.

Until we meet again, Grandma.

Love the Zoo

I got a screaming deal on four zoo passes + six passes for the train/carousel on Living Social several months ago.  I plum forgot about them until I got an email reminding me to use them.

LaVor's mom came for a visit last weekend (Valentine's Day) and we thought that would be the perfect opportunity to use the passes.

We grabbed some lunch and then headed over to the zoo.  When we pulled up, we saw an outrageous line to get in.  The weather was amazing so who could blame all these people for wanting to spend the day outside?  LaVor dropped me off while he and everyone else went to look for a parking space. While waiting in line, the couple in front of me (older gentleman and young Asian woman) were communicating through Google translate.  Made me appreciate speaking the same language as my significant other.

Anyway, the rest of the group joined me in line,  we waited maybe 5 minutes before an employee came through the line, asking if there were any members, Groupons, or Living Social deals.  Ding ding ding!  He yanked us out of the line and we got to go straight to the gate.  Awesome!

Our first stop was the reptile house, one exhibit The Lime and I didn't see when we first visited the zoo almost two years ago.

Can you spot the alligator-like creature?

Doodlebug was way overdue for a nap but insisted on being held and wanted to look at everything. I put my foot down and placed him back in the stroller, where he zonked out in no time. Outings are so much more pleasant when you aren't dealing with a crabby baby.

The wallabies were lounging like they were watching TV (per The Lime), the giraffes were being fed by people who paid to do so, the zebras were hanging out, and the lemurs were being awfully cute. One, in particular, was sitting in this tub as if it was a hot tub, with its arms stretched out to the sides. Hilarious!

The tiger was sitting with its back right against a window, which drew a huge crowd. I attempted to capture a shot through the bamboo but my camera wouldn't focus correctly.

We were a little bummed that there were no elephants but the zoo isn't very big. We did see some lion cubs, which were so stinkin' cute! But again, a huge crowd gathered round to see them and I couldn't get a good picture. Trust me, though, they were darling.

Before we headed back home, the boys got to enjoy a ride on the carousel (Doodlebug's first time!). He wasn't so sure of it at first but ended up relaxing enough to enjoy the two minute ride.

That was quite possibly the best $29 bucks I ever spent. Well worth it for such a fun time.

Socks

Growing up, we had a "sock pile" which consisted of every sock in our household that didn't have a match.  The thing was huge and out of control.  I think it stuck around until my parents moved from our childhood home.

When I got married, I vowed to not have a sock pile.  I try my darnedest to keep pairs together but somehow, I still end up losing some.

Like the picture above.  I folded several loads of laundry yesterday and had tons of pairs by the end.  But I also had these stragglers.  That tiny one at the bottom, with the blue stripes, lost its partner the first time I washed them! I have no clue where the other sock is; I've looked everywhere.

So it looks like, no matter how hard I tried to avoid it, a sock pile is forming.  Hmph!

Doodlebug - Tally Mark 9

-Moved into the spare bedroom Monday (2/16) night.  Operation Sleep Longer Than 2 Hours is moving along nicely.  He went down at 8:30 last night, woke up and cried it out at 10:30, woke up at 12:30, ate, then slept until 7:00!
-Has one cute little tooth.
-Makes an annoying, repetitive throat clearing sound when he wants attention.
-Much prefers actual food than puréed food.  Who can blame him?
-Likes to lay on pillows.
-Gives high fives.
-Loves sneaking behind the tv stand.
-Has all the ladies at my grandma's complex eating out of the palm of his hand.
-Makes a mad dash for the fridge if you open the door.  Same with the bathroom.
-Loves blowing raspberries.
-Usually takes his socks off if he's wearing any.
-Likes to look out windows/sliding glass doors.
-Is a little love bug!

All Grown Up

(The Lime wearing the same shirt at roughly the same age here)

Why is it that when babies/little boys get their hair done, they look so much older?

This sweetie pie had a big week of milestones.  For a couple of days, I had noticed his lower teeth seemed to be closer to erupting.  Rewind to July, when he was drooling like a mutha and his pediatrician said he was starting to teethe.  Yes, we've been teething for 6.5 months.  The Lime got his first tooth at 5 months, so we were wondering why Doodlebug's were taking so long (reason number 174 as to why they're complete opposites of each other).  Fast forward to last Friday, February 6, when I stuck my finger in his mouth and finally felt the rigid edge of a tooth.  It's exciting!  The next one is ready to erupt any minute.  And his tooth buds up top are so stinkin' adorable.  I can't wait to see what those look like when they come in.

Then he decided to start saying Dada on February 13.  We aren't quite sure if he's associating the word with LaVor (LaVor thinks he's trying to say The Lime's name) but he's saying it all the time, including right this second.

He's almost been out of the womb as long as he was in.  Time is just zippin' on by, whether we (especially I) like it or not.

Hardy Har Har

We had a break in the rain today and The Lime was begging us to go to the park. We spent some time on the swings when The Lime noticed a boy and his dad playing catch. I mentioned that we'd be finding out his T-ball team in the next week or so and then the conversation got funny.

The Lime: If they put me on the A's, I'm not playing. If I'm on the Giants or Seattle, I'm playing.

LaVor: You don't get to choose the team, they'll pick one for you.

The Lime: Nope, I'm going to play on Seattle.

LaVor: It doesn't work that way. What if they put you on the Purple People Eaters?

*Pause*

The Lime: Do you mean the Rockies? (Because one of their colors s purple)

I just about died laughing. We talked about the team situation a little bit more and told him when he gets big and famous, that's when he'll choose what team he plays on. Until then, he goes where they tell him.

Later on, we were driving to In N Out, discussing what we were going to order for dinner.

The Lime: Can I just get a hamburger with pickles, no cheese? I'll get cheese when I'm 6.

LaVor: Yeah, that's fine. Do you want ketchup on your hamburger?

The Lime: Yeah, I like ketchup! Can I get a soda to drink?

While the car is quiet as LaVor thinks of his answer, I heard The Lime whispering, "Please say yes! Please say yes!"

Once again, lost it. It reminded me of Brik from The Middle, when he looks down and whispers random words.

Dang he's funny! I much prefer the funny kiddo than the stinker bug kiddo I had to deal with this morning. 5 is turning out to be an enjoyable age. Can't wait to see (and hear) what the next 11 months brings.
